Background:
In the Skin Bioscience Department of Unilever, we are responsible for discovering new technologies for skin care. A vacancy has arisen within the Bioscience department for a mathematical modeller responsible for the retrieval, storage, manipulation, modelling and analysis of data that will enable us to identify biological targets for the discovery of actives that improve skin function and appearance.

The challenges posed are considerable and the work is exciting and stimulating with an increasing focus on human biology. This position will develop and build new capabilities for understanding skin physiology with all the challenges and interest of supporting a global company with a diverse portfolio of products.

Main Job Purpose:
This research is leading to the requirement for integration of both biological and chemical data that may not be amenable to analysis through traditionally used techniques. We are therefore seeking to recruit an individual with a background in mathematical modelling. The ability to work in multidisciplinary teams alongside biologists, chemists and statisticians as well as an enthusiasm for learning new science will be critical for the role.

The successful candidate will apply mathematical modelling techniques to generate new insights from our data and ultimately contribute to the development of new insights on skin physiology and interventions to improve the function and appearance of skin. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop clear, consistent and transparent models
  • Work with experimental scientists in multidisciplinary teams
  • Identification and application of new techniques and approaches
  • Recommendations on data requirements for the development of new models
  • Consultancy, advice and training on analysis and modelling
  • Liaison with external modelling communities
Skills/Experience:
  • MSc or equivalent in chemical or control engineering, physics or applied mathematics.
  • PhD or equivalent in the above disciplines is highly desirable.
  • Experience of using computational techniques for implementing models (e.g. MATLAB, C++, Java, R, VB or others) is essential.
  • Evidence that the candidate has applied modelling techniques to solve real-world problems. It is desirable but not essential that these problems be related to biology.
  • Expertise in computational modelling of complex biological systems (metabolic/signaling/regulatory pathways) is essential.
  • A track record of working in multidisciplinary teams is desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent communication skills.
Competencies:
  • Breakthrough thinking
  • Organisational awareness
  • Seizing the future
