MCBIOS History and Theme
The first two MCBIOS conference were held in Little Rock Arkansas. The themes were "Building Networks" and "Bioinformatics: A Systems Approach", respectively. In 2006 and 2007, the conference was held in Louisiana. We met in Baton Rouge in 2006, where the theme was "Bioinformatics: A Calculated Discovery", and in New Orleans in 2007, where the theme was "Computational Frontiers in Biomedicine". The 2008 conference was held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and the theme was "Systems Biology - Bridging the Omics".

The sixth annual MCBIOS (MidSouth Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Society) will be held in Starkville, MS on February 20-21, 2009. The theme will be "Transformational Bioinformatics: Delivering Value from Genomes".

Keynote Speakers
We are delighted to announce our keynote speakers for the conference:

Howard Cash, President and CEO, Gene Codes Corporation
Laura Elnitski, PhD, Head of the Genomic Functional Analysis Section at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)
Cathy Wu, PhD, Director of the Protein Information Resource (PIR) and Professor in Departments of Oncology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Georgetown University Medical Center

Call for Participation
The Conference Program Committee invites you to submit an abstract for either a poster or platform (oral) presentation. Abstracts are limited to 250 words in length. Participants presenting either a poster or a talk will be eligible to submit a manuscript for publication in the Conference Proceedings. As in previous years, we plan to publish the proceedings in BMC Bioinformatics, a highly-ranked open-access journal.

We are also seeking volunteers to serve on various MCBIOS Conference and Society committees. Please contact Dr. Dawn Wilkins ([email protected]), the Societys President to volunteer. We are also looking for volunteers to lead the society (board or committee members) or for forming local chapters throughout the region. Please contact any current board member to volunteer or for more information.

Topics
The conference is open to all topics within the areas of bioinformatics and computational biology. Based on abstract submissions and suggestions that we receive (see below), technical sessions and panel discussions will be chosen. Topics include sequence analysis, image processing, microarray analysis, protein structure/function prediction, gene finding algorithms, genomics, metagenomics, pathway analysis, systems biology and metabolic/cellular simulations. Other bioinformatics topics are welcome, but should be of general interest to the participants and relevant to the scope of the conference.

Venue
The 2009 MCBIOS conference will be held at the Hunter Henry Center at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. Starkville is located in east central Mississippi about 30 miles west of the Alabama State line. It is accessible by U.S. Highway 82 and State Highways 12 and 25. A block of hotel rooms has been reserved in the Comfort Suites within easy walking distance of the conference center. Call 662-324-9595 and tell them you are with the Computational Biology/MCBIOS group. The rate is $109/night plus tax.

There is dormitory-style housing available on campus. Herbert Hall has rooms located on the 2nd and 3rd floors (each floor has community restrooms).

The rates are:
    single ($30 plus tax)

Students are especially invited to submit abstracts for oral presentations or posters. Student awards for best posters and oral presentations will be presented on Saturday, February 21st. The awards are sponsored by the Environmental Laboratory of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer and Research Development Center (ERDC).

To be considered for an award, the work must be presented (in either poster or oral presentation) and the student author must be listed as the first author and be responsible for most of the research performed in the presented work.

Join our Listserv
We are actively recruiting new members of our society! We encourage you to join the MCBIOS-L listserv. This is a moderated listserv with very low volume -- only "official" society announcements are approved. For some of you, this may be your first awareness of the society. If you wish to join the MCBIOS-L listserv, you can send a message to LISTSERV -AT- UALR.EDU (no subject required) with "SUBSCRIBE MCBIOS-L" in the body, or send email to RAHall2 -AT- UALR.Edu to be added to (or removed from) the MCBIOS-L listserv.

More MCBIOS History
The annual MCBIOS conference has historically attracted internationally renowned speakers, including David Mount, author of the popular bioinformatics textbook Bioinformatics: Sequence and Genome Analysis, Michael Gribskov, President of the International Society for Computational Biology, Alan Leshner, AAAS CEO and executive publisher of Science, Richard A. Gibbs, Director of the Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center and Dr. Winston Hide, Director of the South African National Bioinformatics Institute.
The conference attendance in previous years has reflected its status as the premier forum in the region, gathering faculty and students from all states in the region and beyond.
